Lovelution is…

Love + Revolution.
An evolution of love.
It begins with YOU and moves outward.
Yep, flipped and reversed from what we’ve been taught.
A personal revolution where love heals.

Lovelution: A Journey to Self is a memoir being written week-by-week as I take bite-sized + deliberate action each Tuesday toward my writing dreams as I reflect on my journey of using love + intention to create the life I dream and deserve.

I have dreamed of writing a book since seeing my master’s thesis hard-covered bound in 2006.

11 years later, I have fiercely committed to my dream. While I have been writing in various genres and forms since leaving the classroom and setting out on my career path, it’s time to pause and to not only share the lessons from the 35 years of Life as a Black queer mama, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. The journey to self and healing to stand in my Truth and power. An opportunity to serve and guide those who choose to accept the mission to use identity as a tool to reveal and unravel the stories we tell ourselves, one another, and perpetuate through our own limiting beliefs and self-sabotage.

3 weeks prior to turning 35 years old, I gave a talk of a similar name: Spiritual Activism: A Journey of Self. This unfolding in my hometown will stand as the foundation for this work that led to reflecting on 35 Lessons at 35 Years of Life. This simple act has now inspired this mama to take action every Tuesday by sharing my current and past reflections on each lesson as I take bite-sized + deliberate action towards my writing dreams. Totalling 35 lessons that will conclude in early March 2018.

Both the talk and the weekly lessons will serve as cornerstones of the book I’m currently calling…

This consciousness-raising memoir explores identity through the lens of space and positionality to untangle the web of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion/spirituality, class, education, and region to name just a few dimensions of self at the intersection of privilege, disadvantage, tokenism, and all the various forms of power. Mama J shares the lessons learned and unlearned during her journey from a biracial girl raised by a white mom and Black father to a Black queer mamaprenur, love leader, and wife now raising and co-parenting her own mixed-raced daughter in a mixed raced two-mom family.

Background

In 2016, Mama J completed her master’s thesis titled “Triple Threat: My Journey as a Black Lesbian Student-Athlete in Search of Additional Black Lesbian Student-Athletes.” That work documents the six-month research journey of embracing her identity as a Black Lesbian Student-Athlete while searching for peers like herself going through a similar journey while at the intersections of sport and identity. Fast forward over a decade later and just like the world around us has shifted so has Jillian’s identity.
