Lesson 14: Find Your Soul-Medicine ✨

♥ Part of the Series 35 Lessons at 35 Years of Life

With a commitment for bite-sized + deliberate action today, tomorrow, and every day, I keep putting one foot in front of the other to create what I believe in—Intentional Justice

Soul Medicine (v.)

✨ an experience or action to be present with your essence or inner knowing ✨

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

As I shared in Lesson 11: You are the Mama (Guardian) of Your Soul, the “simple act to try something new led to my first commitment to my own personal dose of soul medicine.”

Acupuncture :: my first dose of soul medicine

A mind, body, and soul connection similar to that of being on the basketball court, my first love and physical soul medicine. Unlike basketball, acupuncture is an opportunity to lie still and simply listen. Listen to the swirling wonder in my thoughts, a curiosity to hone-in on the themes rising up and asking to have a seat at the table. Then a stillness that comes from simply noticing. Scanning the mind and body for what’s asking to be heard.

This is how I experience acupuncture—a tool to my inner knowing. Now let me be clear when I began this journey, this was not what I imagined experiencing. Instead, I had a goal for a specific outcome—”a dream to slowly and methodically decrease my bipolar medication because one thing was for certain–I did not want that medicine in my body when I conceived.” (shared in Lesson 11)

That’s the “quality of consciousness” I brought to this action. As shared in Oprah’s new book, The Wisdom of Sundays,

An intention is a quality of consciousness that you bring to an action. ~Gary Zukav

While I have unconsciously lived this wisdom for years, it wasn’t until I began noticing a theme being reflected back to me—the intentionality I bring to everything I do—that my goals shifted to intentions.

Intentional Justice™ IS…

…Your Personal Soul Medicine

Intention is everything. Goals are attainable.

Only YOU know the quality of your consciousness.

This, the heart of Intentional Justice™—bite-sized + deliberate daily action today, tomorrow, every day!

The ironic thing is that I did not set out intending to embark on my own personal journey of seeking justice. It simply began with love, leadership, and trusting my vision for becoming a mama. In doing so, I found the ideal dose of soul medicine to Love Myself like a Mother! with Intentional Justice

My Current Soul Medicine

Let me count all the ways I love to feed by heart and soul. Here are just a handful of my favs…

  • Writing
  • Walking the dog
  • QT with my daughter and wife (together and 1-on-1)
  • Scandal or Empire
  • Laughter
  • Dancing
  • The sun
  • Organic + whole-as-possible yummy food with libation as a bonus!
  • Family adventures

The later, family adventure is what resets me for The Lovelution as I continue to seek Intentional Justice™ (bite-sized + deliberate action) in my daily life when things can feel like a struggle in the juggle.

Listening to Your Heart

We all need a reason to come home…

A place to be our authentic self or at the very least to put our best foot forward as we take bite-sized + deliberate action to feed our souls.

  • What if, all you needed was space to listen to your heart?
  • What if, you were your own fuel?
  • What if, you committed to improving the quality of your consciousness by investing in YOU?

There’s no need to keep wondering because I’m answering the call I felt nearly 5 years ago when I set a powerful intention to listen to my heart about how I wanted to feel.

I’m thrilled to share that I’m in the process of creating The Soul-Medicine Sisterhood. A virtual collective that feeds your soul for The Lovelution—a journey to self to lead with love + revolution in your life + career + community. This is how we achieve justice in our lives, or better yet Intentional Justice™ Because…

We all need a reason to come home…

A place to love ourselves the way we dream and deserve.

This collective will invite you on a monthly journey to tap into your soul medicine by listening and tapping into your own cycle cypher: an invitation to name your Truth, claim your power through the intersectionality of your identity, and accountability to take action in releasing, living, and relearning.

This activates your inner knowing allowing yourself to G R O W as you…

Listen, Love, and Live your Call to Action.

Lesson 8: It’s a Journey Not a Race

♥ Part of the Series 35 Lessons at 35 Years of Life ♥

With a commitment for bite-sized + deliberate action today, tomorrow, and every day that I keep putting one foot in front of the other to create what I believe in.

As the saying goes, “It’s a journey, not a race.”

Without a reference for this quote, just a knowing, as if it’s an absolute Truth, I have been on a 5-year journey of entrepreneurship. A Journey, Not a Race.

I can see it with rose-colored lens. Not because it has been easy. Quite the contrary. It’s more that I know I have traveled the path that was meant for I. Learning lessons that are now informing what’s next as I keep putting one foot in front of the next. The experience that has been the ultimate test of feeling all the feels, the highs, and lows and inevitable uncertainty like my favorite roller coaster with it twists and turns and no sight of the track ahead.

As I shared in Lesson 7: Change Begins with a Belief, I was in Chicago last week for the 4th annual Culturally Responsive Evaluation & Assessment Conference. It has been a full week since the conference wrapped and the learnings and future implications are truly just beginning to reveal themselves. I loved returning to the office and being excitedly asked by colleagues and leaders, “How was the conference?” Below are my…

Top 5 Nuggets of Love from CREA 2017 & Chicago

  1. Continued Insights: I am in a place of honoring that the learnings will continue to drip out in the various spaces and places in which I am invigorated to share my insights and resulting dreams. What’s magical is these are the same space and places where I lead and contribute.
  2. Research Validation for Intentional Justice™: Small action = the biggest impact 💫 This was one of my biggest takeaways from a roundtable I joined on Day 1, which is based in systems change research. As soon I heard this nugget of love, it was the confirmation that there’s power in bite-sized + deliberate daily action.
  3. What does it mean to be culturally responsive? Simply put, I would define it as an individual, community, or organization that responds to an individual or experience based on a cultural understanding or competency. In other words, how one chooses to follow the dominant narrative or create or tell a counter-narrative. With this understanding, I am grounded in how culturally responsive along with culturally relevant applies to education, and in particular, research, evaluation, and assessment. Mission accomplished!
  4. Seeds Planted: It was a magically powerful experience to walk into a room and look around to be in a community of learners with fellow Black women, changing the game as leaders. As such, numerous seeds were planted that I am looking forward to nourishing in the weeks and months to come.

Is the Intention: Knowledge or Insight?

In the same roundtable session, I mentioned above, there was also the opportunity to ask questions and dialogue to not just simply learn knowledge, but as I later realized to provide an experience in which we as learners would experience an insight.< strong>insight (n.): the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing.

When I look back on my entrepreneurial and career journey over the last 5 years, as well as my experience in Chicago, one thing is clear.

Insight creates action. ~ mama j

In fact, find myself in a space of turning dreams into actionable outcomes. Project planning with intention. Honoring the time and space I have while also tending to individual relationship-building and collective community-building. The dynamic nature of creating within a system while also documenting the systems I’ve tested and begun to implement. Breaking each intention into bite-sized + deliberation action. This is Intentional Justice

Systems change research confirms that it’s the small action that has the biggest impact. We can simply focus on gaining knowledge or experiencing life and making choices that create the opportunity for insight. What will you choose: knowledge or insight?

Takeaway: There’s rarely such a thing as an overnight success. Many have said it before, yet now for I, it’s an insight instead of knowledge gained.

Intentional Justice™ in Your Life

So I ask, what bite-sized + deliberate action will you make in your life today to create insight?

It may feel like a leap, which often asks us to stretch our vulnerability and courage muscles, yet what I know to be true is it will be worth all the feels of uncertainty, as well as the twist and turns. That said, I leave you will a final Q:

What’s been your superpower in your journey?

Tell me in the comments below it’s where the magic happens.

Mama J’s #60DayMamapreneurChallenge | Create YOUR #MamaMindset

Hi! I am Jilian “Mama J” Roth. I am Black queer mamapreneur + wife livin’, learnin’, and lovin’ in Berkeley, CA. While I have had some sort of side hustle since launching my first biz on my 30th birthday (nearly 4 years ago),I have gained the clarity of how I can best to use my unique experience, gifts, and talents to serve. On March 17, 2016, I spent an hour brainstorming my #boldlifeproject wish list (dubbed by fellow mamapreneur Tessa Chittle) and dreaming what it would look like in action. What is my project YOU ask? My bold life project is implementing the 60 days of clarity gained from living each day with small, deliberate action each day (what I have dubbed Intentional Justice™ as I create + name + frame a Mama Mindset™ by sharing the framework with fellow mamas as it is being lived over the next 60 days (May 16 – July 16, 2016) by this Bay Area mamapreneur in the mama juggle raising a toddler and building a business that will sustain my family while loving the adventure of life.

Sending light + love in YOUR journey!
