My Fuel: Part 2

My Fuel: Moving Closer to the Unknown

“Pressure creates diamonds.” #truthbomb @DanielleLaPorte

Hey Team Justice! With the reveal of the newly designed Jillybeads 4 Justice website on Monday, June 9th, which also happens to be the business’ 2nd Anniversary and my 32nd Birthday (yay!), it’s a blissful (and a bit stressful) time in my world. Plus, my wife* and I recently shared with our friends and community that we’re expecting our first child in late November (double yay!!), so I’ve been a bit distracted by all things baby after a less than awesome first trimester. The point is there’s no shortage of excitement with summer on the horizon. With all the joy in the air, it’s easy to lose sight of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time.

When I reflect back on what led to the initial launch of my “justicepreneur” venture, I was approximately 9-11 months past my last life transition, which in my case seems to happen in twos. Then it was getting word that I would be laid off at the end of August 2011 after having our commitment ceremony and spending a month away to backpack through Europe; ultimately, leaving me one month to find a job before my other one ended. Once again, three years later, I will be making not only one life transition, yet two—becoming a mom along with my position at Mills College ending in August. While a bit scary, I took the job knowing that this could be the case and began making plans in January for next steps, in case my position would indeed end.

All this is to say, the reality is beginning to hit home that I’m about to take a huge professional (and personal) leap—focusing on Jillybeads 4 Justice full-time—instead of actively pursuing new jobs. Such a decision has without a doubt been years in the making, stemming from the desire for action and personal agency along with the ability to embrace my vision of changing the world. It was my love of beads and making jewelry that guided my leap of faith to manifest the launching of my business and website two years ago (June 9, 2012), yet this is just one part of the whole me. That said, it’s time to expand and put into action the “Advocate & Educate” component of the Jillybeads 4 Justice mission of “Advocate & Educate, all while Accessorizing.”

Curious about what this will look like?! Stay tuned for a special 2nd Anniversary blog post on Monday…

With love and desire, ~ Jillian

*You might be wondering why I use the term wife instead of partner. I resisted the term for awhile due the inequality we experienced. That said, the simple answer is now that we’re legally married, I have the honor and privilege to call her my wife.
