How Do You Want to Feel?

This post is a slight departure in hopes of inspiring you to turn inward. As I embrace the last days and weeks of my first pregnancy while anticipating the start of my next chapter—motherhood, let’s talk about your life.

Do you feel free? Joyful? Connected? The Life You Imagine

Most importantly, does your life feel the way you want it to feel?

When I read The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte for the first time, I was focused on outlining and achieving my next set of accomplishments instead of creating a life based on how I wanted to feel each day or when my goal(s) were achieved. In fact, I initially stumbled across Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Stater Sessions in my quest for online entrepreneur resources. I was immediately hooked by her upfront and authentic prose, so I signed up for email updates.

Fast forward a few months later and this led to me purchasing the initial Desire Map program on NYE 2012, which was fitting since this is when Danielle came up with the process a decade earlier. This purchase solidified my desire to change my relationship to goals in 2013. This was HUGE considering goal-setting has personally been an annual NYE tradition since around the age of 10. While I worked through the process individually and ultimately landed on 5-7 CDFs that first year (2013), it wasn’t until I led a DM Book Club earlier this year (2014) that the power of the process was undeniable. I document my process in these two blog posts:

Needless to say, The Desire Map was the catalyst for the change I needed.

I now feel…open and spacious. To my heart’s desire. Ease and relaxed. Regarding my to-dos. Overall, peace and calm.

This book isn’t just intellectual theory. It actually walks you through the process of practically (+ soulfully) creating a life that you actually want to live, connected to people, experiences and things that you actually want to be connected to.

It seems so obvious, right?  Of course! My life should feel good!

But the thing is, so many of us aren’t living that way. We’re fixated on what others think we should do. We’re pushing ourselves to meet someone else’s expectations of The Great Mom, The Successful Businesswoman, The Patient Wife or The Forgiving Friend.

In all that striving and achieving to meet other people’s expectations, a lot of us have lost ourselves. For a while, I did. The Desire Map snapped me out of it and got me back on my own life track, moving towards a future that feels right for me. And because of the profound impact desire mapping has had on my life, I want to sing about this work from the rooftops. I want you to have this opportunity to reclaim your life too, which is why…

When I heard that Danielle was creating a Licensing program so that people could teach this material, I was one of the first people waving my arms at the front of the line. Because I truly believe that advocating authenticity and educating social justice is actually “healing our souls” work. And now…

I have a process to help guide such work that I know firsthand works. This is why I’m thrilled to announce that not only am I an official Desire Map Licensee (cue the confetti!) that I have also begun preparations to host my first virtual Desire Map Workshop in February/March 2015 with in-person retreats beginning shortly after.

If you’d like to join me, click here for more details.

It’s never too late to live a life that feels good. A life that you consciously choose and design, based on your own core desired feelings. I’d like to help you uncover those feelings so you can start building a life that helps you generate them not just ever so often…EVERY day!!!

Much love,

My Fuel: The Desire Map

How do you want to feel?

Hey Team Justice!

Can you believe it’s already been two weeks?! As time seems to be speeding up with each passing day, week, month, and year, so does my desire to make a difference. Instead of focusing on a never-ending list of to-dos and goal chasing, I have a renewed outlook that has revolutionized my day-to-day perspective—focusing on my core desired feelings.

As I mentioned last time, I have spent the last 5 months Refueling for a Rebirth and one component of that fuel has been The Desire Map*. While I went through the process solo just a year ago (see A New Day: Guided by My Desired Feelings; plus, get a sneak peak of the newly designed Jillybeads website), I had the great fortune to lead an incredible group of women through the process over a 5-week period as I too actively participated. Even though I pride myself on self-reflection and inquiry, going through the process a second time in community, reminded me of the importance and power of going deep and building connection with other women who desire to feel from their heart. By sharing and hearing one another’s thoughts and feelings (ranging from hopes and dreams to doubts and fears) provided connection to our own thoughts and many aha moments.

The Desire Map can be described as a process, system, or philosophy that is about getting to the core of how you want to feel. Danielle LaPorte, the creator, believes when you set goals, “You’re not chasing the goal, you’re chasing the feeling.” As a admit goal-setter since the age of 10, this shift rocked my world. How could I accomplish anything without goals?!

The simple answer…a LOT! It’s amazing how easy a decision is to make when you focus on how it will make you feel. Thanks to the Desire Map, I’ve been able to get to the core of what’s important in a way that has allowed me to go deep within myself while helping to go to a place that I hadn’t even fully understood that I needed or wanted to go.

The Desire Map has become a practice. With my core desired feelings (CDFs) of luminous libertybliss, and compassionate expansion (each of these links go to a Pinterest board with representative words and images), these five words have become a prayer I say in the morning and a reminder throughout the day. They are what I say to myself when I get frustrated or something painful arises. Simply put, they help to center me while reframing and revolutionizing how I approach EVERYTHING!

This is part of my fuel and a tool that will be incorporated into my new vision for Jillybeads 4 Justice. If you are interested in learning more or joining a future book club (either in-person or virtually), please feel free to reach out to me by email at

With love and desire,

~ Jillian

Refueling for a Rebirth

What have you been up to for the last 5 months?!

Hey Team Justice (what I would like to affectionately call you now)!

If you’re new to our community here, welcome, so lovely to have you! And of course lots of appreciation and a big hug too if you’ve been following for some time. I’m so grateful for our connection. It’s been a while since you’ve heard from me…like a looooong while. Over 5 months to be exact, so, you might be wondering…what have I been up to during this time?

Although I ended 2013 envisioning that I would jumpstart 2014 with a redesigned website and leading an amazing group of women through the Desire Map via the Berkeley Book Club, only one of those actually happened. One for two isn’t bad. While the later had a bigger impact than I imagined (stay tuned for more about this soon), the redesigned website became a bigger project than I had wanted to admit or accept at the time. I’m happy to report that progress has been made on this front, and I will be revealing the new site on or before the 2nd Anniversary of Jillybeads 4 Justice first going live (Tuesday, June 9th)!

Across my various roles—educational researcher, part-time MBA/MA in Educational Leadership student, justicepreneur, wife, daughter, sister, and friend—one theme has remained constant. I’ve been thinking a lot about impact. So much so that I’ve been paralyzed by endless, sometimes competing and conflicting thoughts: What’s my desired impact? What changes do I want to see in the world? How does my work make a positive impact?

It’s no secret that I strive to make a difference in the world. In fact, it’s part of the Jillybeads 4 Justice tagline—“Making a Difference, One Bead at a Time.” Although I’m not quite ready to reveal what my months of visioning and thoughtful action will mean for myself personally or professionally or Jillybeads 4 Justice, I will share that I’m thrilled, ready, and looking forward to consistently being in touch with you bi-monthly on first and third Wednesday of the month (and maybe a bit more if it feels relevant)!!

I plan to continue sharing my reflections on our culture and society through the lens of social justice, as well as at the intersection of education, business, and sport. In addition, I will be mixing in motivational quotes, photo fun, interviews, inspiring stories, website and apps supporting action you already take along with prompts to explore what matters most to you. Plus, much more…

I’m excited for this new journey and delighted you will be joining me!

In loving solidarity,

~ Jillian
